SILVIA COHEN W
Based in Miami since 2018 , Silvia Cohen continues in both her artwork as well as in art teaching activities.
In the beginning and moved by the pictures of photographer Andy Sweet about the south beach Jewish people, she transformed them into characters that go to other imaginary and bizarre destinations.
Then she turned to her own family and the Jewish life of the 60's and 70's back in Caracas, Venezuela. Her artwork depicted people in parties or simply enjoying life. This body of work was showcased at her first solo exhibition LA ALEGRÍA DE VIVIR, curated by Adriana Meneses Imber, from Nov. 20th, 2022 to Feb. 20th, 2023 at The Jewish Museum - FIU in Miami, Florida.
WHAT IF...IF ONLY is a new project based on women mugshots from the beginning of the 20th century and items considered luxury at the time . This work on incarcerated women pretending to be someone else, brings attention to the fact that, despite their past decisions, they still longed for the same dreams and desires as those who had access to privilege and opportunities. All luxury items hold a certain irony with a barrier that highlights the separation between the women and the things that were unattainable.
WHAT IF...IF ONLY, curated by Adriana Meneses Imber, will be Silvia Cohen's second solo exhibition from April 5th to the 26th, 2025 at MIFA, Miami International Fine Arts, Miami, Florida.
